Spain has no solicitors as such: the job is done by an abogado, and some of it by the notario, who is a public official and does not act for either side. Clients from the UK often assume the notary protects them in a purchase. We are the ones who do.

What British clients ask us in Marbella.
Do I need a lawyer if the notary is already involved?
The notary does not act for you. Checking the property and negotiating the contract is your side’s job, and that is what we do.
Can you sign for me if I am in the UK?
Yes, with a power of attorney signed before a UK notary and apostilled, or at a Spanish consulate.
Can I exchange my UK driving licence?
If you are resident in Spain, yes: an agreement between Spain and the UK allows it. Newcomers should do it within six months of becoming resident.
